[Female storyline] Your dear cousin, Xie Zhihan, has just become a concubine to the emperor. Her brother, Xie Weijin, is now a royal guard. You have secured a place in the palace due to your excellent skill in embroidery. Navigate the complex palace politics and climb the ranks as you adjust to your new life in the Royal Palace. The palace can be a dangerous place; with jealous concubines, framed murders, and so many other difficulties and obstacles. Use your wit and intelligence to uncover secrets and protect yourself and your loved ones.

[Male storyline]

You play as the 5th brother of the current emperor, you are known as the 5th prince. 5 years ago is when you were banished from the capital by the former emperor (your father) because you had made too many mistakes that you weren't even able to correct them. You've recently received a letter from the current emperor Yuan Yi to come back to the capital as you are needed, with something. With determination, you immediately set off with your guard, Dongliu.

The former emperor (your father) died when you were still banished from the capital. He had caught a cold in the autumn hunting an passed away the next spring, this all while you were away. You are filled with grief and guilt when you learn about the news especially when you know that the emperor never even asked about you even when he was on his death bed. You also feel angry that you had to learn about your father's death through the official announcement quoting "I am a prince and I had to find out about his death like a civilian, through the official announcement."

Your brother, also known as the current emperor, wants you to stay in the capital and quote "do the things that father didn't finish", so you obviously accept and you promise to do your best. Yuan Yi also talks about the happenings after the former emperor's passing, stating that the Empress Zhao took over the power of the harem and that Yuan Yi's mother wasn't able to do anything against her. All of the ministers from the Shen family turned into Zhao's 'puppets'. And lastly he talks about your mother's family and how all of them were deprived of their titles. Yuan Yi makes you wonder about the former emperor when he says "Have you ever thought of what they would do to you if father didn't banish you?"
